A good question was asked by one of my students... its feels a but funny trying to fight from this position, surely we would not fight like this on the street.. and he was right..

In Wing Chun something that is very misunderstood is that the forms teach you how to position your body correctly and to correctly place the hands and feet, the forms over a long period of time make your body stronger, this is done by performing section one of the Siu Lim Tau from anything like 15 minutes upwards while, the other forms when preformed help you with other characteristics or the art, make no mistake what you learn in the forms does not mean you have to fight like that, the physical abilities developed in the forms shine through when its time to fight, your body knows what to do. As a rule of thumb if anything feels uncomfortable or awkward or even if you are off balance then may be your just doing it wrong and need to seek guidance.

China trip September 2009

A good trip to Hong Kong and China, lots training was achieved with so many different skill levels so much was learned from each other, and Grandmaster Samuel Kwok as usual showed us so much about the system and gave us a great deal to come away with and pass on, Hong Kong was very warm, damp and it rained a lot but you never really noticed because you were having a good time, the MTR system was really good for getting round if you get the chance to take one of these trips don’t hesitate just do it. The flight to Beijing was a breeze and from the second we landed everything was taken care off, the tour guides were great and filled our time to the brink with exploration.

How to train Wing Chun

A handy tip for all those that think they can jump to the end of the Wing Chun system and skip the rest, when you learn the Sil-Lim-Tau (Siu-Lim meaning small or little and Tau meaning the way or path thus translated a little idea) its stance is commonly know as siu-lim-tau ma or also called yee-chi-kim-yeung-ma, this stance is meant to be stood in for long periods of time to build the strength in the legs so that when you begin to learn chum-kiu your legs can support your weight for the skills you are about to build on THEN when you have completely understood chum-kiu you will then have the strength to begin biu-jee / biu-tze and then when this is understood and complete you can take your skills to the dummy and learn the dummy form and from here break down the form and so on.
